More than 11,000 people on Luzon Island in the northern Philippines have been evacuated out of the path of Typhoon Noul.  The storm is expected to reach Category Four status with winds as string as 195 kilometers per hour.  But of particular concern is heavy rain around the Mount Bulusan volcano, which has been spewing ash recently:  Rain plus ash could result in dangerous mudflows down the mountainsides.

A 17-year old Greenvale, VIC boy faces terrorism charges after state and federal cops found three explosive devices in his home.  After the raid on Friday, authorities said the kid was planning an attack somewhere in Australia.  Investigators say it does not appear to be linked to alleged Islamic State-inspired terror plot planned for Anzac Day.

US President Barack Obama led “VE Day” events in Washington, DC, marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe – the Pacific War would hang on for a few more months. Mr. Obama praised the generation that he said “saved the world”. 

Russia held a massive military parade to mark 70 years since defeating nazi Germany in World War II.  Conspicuously absent were leaders and representatives from most of Russia’s Western allies, who chose to attend a remembrance in Poland instead, because of Russia’s support of rebels in eastern Ukraine.  Chinese People’s Liberation Army troops took part, and Russia used the occasion to show off a new, high-tech tank.

A Spanish military transport plane crashed a mile north of Seville’s San Pablo airport, killing four out of the six on board.  It’s the first accident involving the Airbus A400M, which is supposed to be Europe’s newest troop and heavy cargo carrier.  But the program has been beset with delays and cost overruns.

An Egyptian court sentenced deposed former president Hosni Mubarak and his sons to three years in prison, in the retrial of their corruption case.  Authorities might consider the sentence already served.  But if it withstands appeal, it would establish Mubarak as a convicted criminal who embezzled public money to finance and maintain his personal presidential palaces.

At least 30 prisoners and ten guards are dead in a prison break near Baghdad, Iraq, and 50 to 200 inmates got away – some, convicted terrorists.  There are conflicting reports on how it all went down.  Islamic State takes credit for attacking the jail, but other reports indicate that guards were quickly overwhelmed and disarmed when they went to respond to a fight amongst inmates.

Afghan authorities say a number of foreign fighters were part of a Taliban assault on a northern city last month that displaced at least 100,000 residents.  Kunduz Provincial Governor Mohammad Omer Safi said Afghan troops found the bodies of 18 foreigners on the battlefield – fighters from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Chechnya.  Safi said the dead Taliban appeared to be recent “graduates” from Madrassas in Afghanistan and Pakistan, with little battlefield experience.

Police in Macedonia say they’ve been fighting running battles with a “terrorist” group from a neighboring Balkan state.  At least five cops are dead and 20 ar injured in the fighting in Kumanovo, close to the borders with Kosovo and Serbia.  The militant group appears to be well-armed with automatic rifles and bombs, and well-trained, according to authorities.

Guatemala’s Vice-President has stepped down amid a widening corruption scandal.  Looks like quite a few people wre happy to see her go.  Roxana Baldetti of the conservative Patriotic Party quit after her secretary went missing – He is accused of heading a customs bribery ring.  

The nightmare could finally be ending for Liberia.  The nation has gone 42 without a new Ebola infection, leading the UN World Health Organization to declare Liberia Ebola-Free.  More than 11,000 people have died in the West African Ebola epidemic, 4,700 of them in Liberia.  Survivors still face months or even years of complications from the ravages of the virus, but it appears the worst is over.
