A helicopter crash outside Kuala Lumpur killed six people, including Malaysian MP Jamaluddin Jarjis, a former ambassador to the US and prominent businessman. The victims also included an aide to Prime Minister Najib Razak. The helicopter was bringing the party back from the wedding of Najib’s daughter.
The International Committee of the Red Cross is asking for a 24-hour ceasefire in Yemen to deliver life-saving aid to the war-torn country. More than 48 tones of medicine and surgical kits are standing by, and a Red Cross surgical team is on standby in Djibouti. The fighting is a mess of factions and religions – Shiite Houthis, Sunnis of al Qaeda, and Islamic State, local tribes, forces loyal to the deposed government – all hating each other and battling for their bits and pieces of real estate.
Islamic State managed to anger the whole world again, descending on the UNESCO World Heritage site at Hatra, Iraq. The group released video of terrorists attacking 2,000-year-old statues and carvings with sledgehammers, and shooting at them with AK-47s. IS already looted and destroyed other historic sites, including the 3,000-year old Nimrud. London University Archaeologist Lamia al-Gailani said of the attacks: “They are erasing our history.”
Christian congregations are on edge in Kenya after last weeks’s al Shabaab attack at Garissa University that killed some 150 people. The terrorists singled out Christian students for murder, while releasing Muslims. Al Shabaab claims its revenge for Kenya’s military involvement in anti-terror attacks in Somalia, and vows Kenya’s streets will run “red with blood” in the future. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta is warning mosques and Islamic schools not to assist the terrorists or help spread radicalism.

A 19-year old girl in Gujarat, India is in stable condition after being rescued from a hungry crocodile by her mum. The girl has injuries to her legs. They were doing the laundry on the banks of the Vishwamitri River when the croc clamped down on the daughter’s legs. Mum picked up the bat used to beat the clothes and applied it to the beast – for ten minutes, until he finally gave up. Forestry department officials they they’ve been trying to discourage people from going to the river, as more than 200 crocodiles live there.
Former Cuban president Fidel Castro made his first public appearance in more than a year, greeting a Venezuelan delegation arriving in Havana. Fidel turns 89 on 13 August. His last public appearance was at the opening of an artist’s studio in January 2014.
A US court sentenced one of the world’s biggest jerks to 18-years behind bars for operating a revenge porn website in a landmark case. Kevin Bollaert will be eligible for parole in ten years, if he behaves himself in the slam. It’s the first case of its type in the United States, and California was the first state to prosecute someone for posting humiliating pictures online. Bollaert was convicted of 27 counts of identity theft and extortion in connection to the thousands of photos posted online.
