A suicide bomber struck an Afghanistan army bus depot near Kabul, killing at least six soldiers and wounding ten more.  The Taliban has claimed responsibility.  Kabul has been hit by a spate of deadly attacks in recent weeks, as the Taliban seeks to reassert itself as the US military presence fades.

At least four people are dead and seven are wounded in a suicide bombing carried out by suspected Boko Haram militants in Kano, Nigeria.  Two female attackers detonated devices in the northern Nigerian city’s the Kantinkwari market, which is typically packed with crowds of traders, shoppers as well as traffic.

There’s praise from all over the world for 17-year old Malala Yousafzai’s speech at the presentation of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, which Malala shared with Indian childrens’ rights campaigner Kailash Satyarthi.  At the ceremony in Oslo, the Nobel committee called both “champions of peace”.  Satyarti said, “I refuse to accept that the world is so poor, when just one week of global military expenditure is enough to bring all of our children into classrooms.”  Malala said her award was not just for her, but for all children who want peace and a free, quality education:  “I am here to stand up for their rights, raise their voice. It is not time to pity them. It is time to take action so it becomes the last time that we see a child deprived of education.”

In Canberra, the Senate’s Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee today released its report that recommends the Government pay compensation to the victims of violence at the Manus Island detention center in February.  23-year old asylum seeker Reza Barati from Iran was killed and 70-more were injured.  The committee blames overcrowding at Manus Island and the Abbott government for failing in its “duty” to protect the asylum seekers.

The United Nations refugee agency is criticizing wealthy nations for “losing its focus on saving lives” as hundreds of thousands of people risk death at sea in search of a better life.  At least 348,000 people have made dangerous and illegal sea voyages this year in an attempt to migrate or seek asylum.  4,272 died in the process.  The UN says some countries are just too focused on keeping foreigners outside of their borders and not on aiding them.

Countries that America criticized for alleged human rights abuses have seized on the US Senate Intelligence Committee report that details torture conducted by the CIA against terrorism suspects, and people the agency kne were innocent.  North Korea is calling on the UN Security Council to censure the US.  Iran’s supreme leader went on social media to declare the US a “symbol of tyranny against humanity” not just for the CIA torture program, but also the thuggish militarized police crackdown on peaceful protesters in Ferguson, Missouri and other demonstrations.

The conservative-dominated US House of Representatives, with absolutely no sense of irony, passed a bill that would impose economic sanctions on certain Venezuelan government officials.  It calls on President Barack Obama to deny visas and freeze assets of Venezuelan officials accused of violating the rights of anti-government groups, which conducted violent demonstrations against the legally- and popularly-elected government.  President Nicolas Maduro is calling on US President Barack Obama to “respect Venezuela” and not to sign it.  Although there are indications that the US president might actually do it, with no sense of irony.

Did you see this Afghani guy who looks – and moves – just like Bruce Lee?!?  WOW…
