Suspended Sydney University Professor Barry Spurr is trying to force the New Matilda Website to take down emails that exposed the academic’s sexist and racist rants. New Matilda owner and editor Chris Graham refuses and stands by the story, in which Spurr – who was on the Abbott Government’s recent National Curriculum Review – referred to minorities and women in the most vile of terms. The University suspended Spurr pending an investigation.
Police in Canada shot and killed a man who struck two soldiers with his car in a hit and run. 25-year old Martin Rouleau apparently was a recent convert to radical Islam, and referred to himself as Ahmad LeConverti. He tried to kill the soldiers in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, a town in French-speaking Quebec between Montreal and the US border. Both were injured, one is in critical condition.
The judge in the Oscar Pistorius case is expected to hand down the athlete’s sentence for the shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The prosecution is calling for a minimum 10-year prison term, the defense is actually arguing for community service and house arrest. Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp on Valentine’s day last year, and for some reason, the judge bought his story that it was an accident.
Hong Kong leaders plan to meet with pro-democracy protesters on Tuesday night. But the authorities say they will not grant the protesters one wish, to allow fully democratic elections for Hong Kong chief executive in 2017 – the candidates must be vetted and approved by a panel in Beijing. Earlier, the Hong Kong high court ordered the demonstrators to vacate their protest camps because they caused hardship for taxi and bus drivers.
Russia says a drunken snowplow operator drove the vehicle into a plane in the runway at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport, causing an explosion that killed Christophe de Margerie, the CEO of the French energy firm Total SA, three crewmembers, and the drunken plow driver. The investigative board answers directly to President Vladimir Putin, and there’s talk of suspensions of other ground crew members who presumably knew about the alcohol abuse on the runways. Total SA is involved in joint ventures with Russian firms in the Far East and Siberia.
Rocksteady and Reggae legend John Holt is dead at age 67. Holt is best known for writing “The Tide Is High” with his group The Paragons, which later became a huge hit for the New York group Blondie. He went on to transition to Reggae as a solo artist in the 1980s, notably writing and recording songs like “Police in Helicopters”.
A judge in Pennsylvania is allowing a lawsuit against Led Zeppelin to continue. The heirs of the late, great Randy California of the band Spirit are suing Zep for allegedly stealing Randy’s song “Taurus” and rewriting it into “Stairway to Heaven”. The plaintiffs say Randy California deserves a writing credit on “Stairway”.
