US President Barack Obama is indicating that he will remove Cuba from the list of nations that sponsor terrorism. Visiting Jamaica on his way to the Summit of the Americans in Panama City, Mr. Obama said he completed a review of the situation and left little doubt of his intentions. The only real question is when the announcement will be made. Earlier this week, it appeared he’d announce it before the summit in which he is expected to come fact-to-face with Cuban President Raul Castro.
While in Jamaica, Obama visited the Bob Marley Museum, but seemed to reject following Jamaica’s lead in decriminalizing marijuana. “I have to tell you, it’s not a silver bullet, because if you are legalizing marijuana, then how do you deal with other drugs and where do you draw the line?” Obama said during a youth forum with Caribbean leaders. He also warned that corporations, and not local growers, might reap the largest benefits from legalization.
Bodies started washing up on the north shore of Haiti near the town of Le Borgne on Thursday morning, eventually totaling 21 corpses. No sign of a ship has been found and it is unclear if there were any survivors.
Liberia’s anti-corruption watchdog says more than A$1 Million of money meant to fight Ebola cannot be accounted for – and it appears to have passed through the country’s defense ministry. It was part of A$16.85 Million in foreign donations to Liberia’s National Ebola Trust Fund. The West African Ebola epidemic killed more than 10,500 people, mostly in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.
A second US state has banned its officials from discussing climate change. Wisconsin’s Board of Commissioners of Public Lands enacted the ban earlier this week, following in the troglodyte footsteps of Florida – both states are controlled by the extreme right-wing of the Republican party, where billionaires set the agenda and order politicians what to do. State employees cannot discuss the reality of global warming and climate change, cannot perform any work related to it, and can’t even answer emailed questions about it.
The rightwing government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has frozen the bank accounts of the Indian unit of Greenpeace for six months. A senior official claims the government has “evidence to prove that Greenpeace has been misreporting their funds and using their unaccounted foreign aid to stall crucial development projects”. Greenpeace rejects this as “clear attempts to silence criticism and dissent”.
