Hello, Australia! – Terrifying video emerges of the Al Shabaab terrorist attack on a Kenyan University – A man is rescued after being lost at sea for more than two months – Think twice before you cool off with an Iced Tea – I write your CareerSpot World News Briefs a quarter mile at a time, for those ten seconds, more or less.. nothing else matters:

The death toll in the Al Shabaab attack on a Kenyan University has skyrocketed to 147 lives lost.  Witnesses recall a horror scene with extremists wielding Kalashnikovs and suicide vests, the latter of which were detonated as Kenyan security forces regained control of Garissa University College.  Al Shabaab told western news media that its gunmen were holding Christians hostage and freeing Muslims – although many of the hostages escaped.  “If you were a Christian you were shot on the spot,” said student Collins Wetangula, “With each blast of the gun I thought I was going to die.”  All four attackers died.  Kenya immediately put a A$286,000 bounty on Mohamed Kuno, the al Shabaab terrorist believed to have planned the attack.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirms that infamous Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir – AKA “Marwan” – was killed during a Philippine Police raid in January.  Part of the identification was a severed finger found at the scene of the ferocious battle between cops and terrorists.  Marwan was allegedly part of the 2002 Bali terrorist attacks, and a prolific bomb maker for jihadists around the world.  The Philippines denied reports he was planning to kill Pope Francis during the Pontiff’s visit.

Prosecutors in China charged former security chief Zhou Yongkang with bribery, abuse of power, and the intentional disclosure of state secrets.  It’s the highest-level prosecution in China in decades.  Former Politburo member Zhou retired in 2012, but has been under investigation since the middle of last year – as are a number of his associates and allies, and was kicked out of the Communist Party in December.  Analysts say it’s a sign of President Xi Jinping consolidating power.

Argentina says it will prosecutor any oil companies operating near the Falkland Islands, which are officially part of the UK, but still claimed as “Las Malvinas” by Buenos Aires.  Earlier this week, three British oil exploration companies announced new oil and gas finds north of the islands.  Argentina insists the oil companies are operating illegally in its territory.

Queensland authorities say there could be more arrests in the killing of dozens of Greyhound Dogs found in Bundaberg earlier this week.  55 carcasses in varying stages of decomposition were in the bush, and it was clear that many were shot.  A 64-year old woman who worked as a greyhound trainer and a 71-year old man made bail after being arrested.

In Tulsa, Okahoma, the driver of a red Dodge SUV was going 96 KPH on the wrong side of the road, crashing head-on into a school bus – which caught the whole thing on its dash cam.  Amazingly, no one on the bus was hurt, and the errant driver was saved by his air bags.

The US Coast Guard says a South Carolina man reported missing at sea more than two months ago has been found – alive.  37-year old Louis Jordan was adrift 200 miles off of the east coast, rescued by a German cargo ship.  The Coastguard sent out a chopper to bring him back to shore, where he says he survived the ordeal by drinking rainwater and eating raw fish.

Doctors say an Arkansas man suffered kidney failure because of what he drank – too much Iced Tea.  The unnamed patient will probably be on dialysis for the rest of his life.  They tested and tested the 56-year old patient who came in with complete renal failure, and ruled out potential cause after potential cause.  But the man said he drank Iced Black Tea, and a lot of it – 16 eight-ounce cups per day.  That’s around 3.78 liters.  Black tea contains a food chemical called Oxalate, which is nasty in high doses and causes kidney stones.  And he was taking it in at levels ten times higher than the average American, daily.

And that is why your CareerSpot World News Correspondent drinks Green Tea.  A compound in Green Tea flattens Oxalate, making it break down in the kidneys before it can cause kidney stones.  And now you know.
