Officials in Burundi are warning demonstrators not to come out on Monday, because the police won’t be able to distinguish political protesters from Islamic extremists. That off-the-wall warning has very little to do with the reason for the weeks of protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to run for a third term in office – and suggests the government is setting up a pretext for a crackdown. Nkurunziza made his first public appearance on Sunday since surviving a coup attempt last week. He didn’t mention the coup, but talked about regional cooperation against the terrorist group al Shabaab.
US Federal investigators have joined local law enforcement on the seen of bikie fight in Waco, Texas that killed nine people and injured 18, all members of outlaw motorcycle clubs – so far identified as the Scimitars, the Cossacks, and the Bandidos, which has 17 chapters in Australia. Potter was known to take his dog Whisper with him on jumps – but two sources say Whisper was not with Potter on his last jump.

Osaka voters rejected a referendum on reorganizing local government to turn Japan’s western metropolis into a mega-city like Tokyo. That’s a major defeat for Mayor Toru Hashimoto, who has more or less based his entire political career on the issue. He promised to serve the remainder of his term and then retire from politics. It creates backbench problems for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who backed the reform – only to see Osaka members of his ruling conservative LDP party team up with the opposition Democrats and the Communists to oppose it.
