Peter Greste won’t rest until his two Al Jazeera coworkers are free from jail in Egypt, according to his jubilant family.  The Aussie journalist was released from jail after more than a year and deported, and is heading back to Brisbane.  The world is still waiting for official word on the fates of Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian national Baher Mohamed, who were jailed along with Greste for ridiculous charges of trying to harm Egypt by reporting the news.

Researchers have halted tests on an experimental drug to fight Ebola because there aren’t enough patients for a sample group.  And they admit, that’s a good problem to have.  The pharmaceutical company Chimerix needed dozens of patients to gauge the effectiveness of the antiviral drug brincidofovir, but fewer than ten have been treated at its facility in Liberia since 2 January.  “It’s more important to end the outbreak than to get the trial done,” said Dr. Armand Sprecher of Doctors Without Borders, which was helping conduct the test.

Twin bombs exploded outside a luxury shopping mall in Bangkok, raising fears of stability in junta-run Thailand.  One man was slightly injured at the Siam Paragon mall, which is popular with both locals and tourists.  Investigators haven’t identified any suspects or motivation.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro says his country has jailed the owners of an unnamed chain store for engineering long queues to whip up anger against his government.  Chronic shortages and long lines are a part of shopping life in Venezuela, and Maduro blames economic elites for an “economic war” to bring down his democratically elected administration.  Caracas has arrested some retailers for price gouging and has summoned bosses at a chain of pharmacies for refusing to open enough check out counters to keep up with demand.

The actor who played the Red Ranger on two incarnations of the Power Ranger’s kid’s action TV franchise has been arrested on murder charges.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office says 36-year old Ricardo Medina stabbed his roommate to death with a Samurai sword after a row.  Medina hasn’t come up with the US$1 Million bond.

Police in the southwestern American city of Albuquerque, New Mexico say a three-year old toddler got hold of his parents’ gun and fired one shot that injured both his dad and his pregnant mum.  The boy’s two-year old sister was also in the small room in the budget motel where the family was staying, but neither child was injured.  The mother is in hospital for observation, but the father has a big problem when he recovers from a stomach wound – he’s a felon on parole, and was not supposed to be around a gun at all.  He’s going from hospital to jail.
