Philippine police say they found the remains of a murdered 12-year old girl at a home once rented by an Australian. 57-year old Peter Gerald Scully is already facing charges of child porn and sexually abusing girls. His Filipina wife reportedly told police that the girl died while being attacked by Scully. He’s under arrest, being investigated in at least one other Philippine jurisdiction, and police believe he is wanted in other countries as well.
Tasmania is banning fracking for another five years. Primary Industries Minister Jeremy Rockliff says the decision is meant to “protect Tasmania's reputation for producing fresh, premium and safe produce”. Fracking involves blasting huge volumes of water and chemicals into the ground to fracture bedrock and release oil and gas deposits. Critics say it fouls aquifers and causes earthquakes.
There is a chasm developing between US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, driving bilateral relations to a very low point. The White House is more loudly condemning Netanyahu for his planned addressed before the US Congress – he was invited by Republicans who bypassed the White House, a flagrant violation of standard diplomatic protocol. Netanyahu accuses the US and international community of underestimating the nuclear threat posed by Iran. However, recently leaked cables indicate Netanyahu was overstating Iran’s capabilities.
Who else isn't getting along? Paris has previously tried to strike a moderate tone regarding Russia and Ukraine. But now, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius says Russia would face more sanctions if Moscow-backed rebels attack the port city of Mariupol, which is still controlled by Kiev. “We’ve told the Russians clearly that if there was a separatist attack in the direction of Mariupol, things would be drastically changed, including in terms of sanctions,” Fabius said in a radio interview.
The head of a rebel group in northern Myanmar says he is not getting any help from Chinese citizens or mercenaries, as has been alleged by the Myanmar government. China also denies any involvement. Two Myanmar soldiers were wounded in the most recent clashes with the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) in Kokang province, which has a large ethnic Chinese community. President Thein Sein imposed martial law in Kokang earlier this month after more than 70 people were killed in the fighting.
Colombian police seized 3.3 tons of cocaine with US$90 Million in a raid near the border with Panama. Police believe a drug gang was readying it to be sent north to nostrils in the US. As big as it seems, the bust represents about one percent of what Colombian drug gangs export every year.
