NATO defense ministers are scheduled to meet in Brussels - topping the agenda will be Russia's attacks in Syria and provocative moves along the border with NATO member Turkey. The smaller Baltic states are also concerned about constant Russian incursions in their airspace. On Wednesday, Russia showed off its military might by launching cruise missile attacks on anti-government targets in Syria from battleships on the Caspian Sea, some 1,500 kilometers away.
Rebels with the US-backed Free Syrian Army released video to show the Russians aren't all that. The 13th Division is seen firing a CIA-supplied advanced TOW missile at a column of Syrian government tanks, supplied by Russia. The TOW missiles win the confrontation. Three soldiers manage to get out of one of the tanks, despite a direct hit and suppressing gunfire from the rebels.
Kurdish rebels say Islamic State fired shells with mustard gas at Peshmerga fighters in northeastern Iraq. The Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs said blood samples from about 35 fighters confirm the use of banned chemical weapons. Kurdish sources do not say if anyone died in the attack. They're appealing to enemies of Islamic State for equipment for protection against chemical attacks.
European Union ministers will meet in Luxembourg to debate speeding up deportations of asylum seekers who didn't make the cut. Measures could include detention to prevent failed asylum seekers from absconding before they're sent away, and how to put pressure on the countries of origins to take back these people. More than 600,000 refugees have flooded into Europe, seeking shelter from war and poverty in the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia.
All three countries at the heart of the West African Ebola Epidemic have reported their first week without a new infection in any of the three - Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Liberia has already been declared free of the disease after 42 days without a new case. Sierra Leone released its last known Ebola patients on 28 September, and Guinea's most recent cases were recorded on 27 September. The UN World Health Organization says more than 11,300 people have died of Ebola disease in this epidemic.
