Hello, Australia! – An elderly cop is charged with killing a man in what many are calling a completely avoidable tragedy – Two Aussies on death row get unexpected support – Screaming and banging can cause a plane to land – And a lot more in your CareerSpot World News Briefs:
Around 330 more Australian troops will head out to Iraq starting tomorrow, as part of the international coalition against Islamic State. PM Abbott says the two-year mission will mostly involve training Iraqi soldiers.
The US and Israel are expressing objections to Russia’s plans to sell missiles to Iran. US Secretary of State John Kerry phoned Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about the S-300 surface to air missiles that have a range of less than 140-kilometers – but would go a long way in protecting Iranian sites from air attacks. Russia originally sold the missile to Iran in 2007, and cancelled them in reaction to economic sanctions passed at the UN – but lifted that moratorium after the nuclear deal Tehran reached with the six major world powers.
Prosecutors in Tulsa, Oklahoma are charging a white 73-year old volunteer sheriff’s deputy with manslaughter for accidentally shooting a black man to death during an arrest, a disturbing episode captured on video. Septuagenarian pretend-cop Robert Bates apparently thought he had reached for his electronic stun gun, but grabbed his sidearm instead. That’s not even the worst part – as 44-year old career criminal Eric Harris lays bleeding out, he warns he is losing his breath. Another cop kneels on his head and says, “F**k your breath.” No charges for that guy. Nor are there charges for Sheriff Stanley Glanz, who lets wealthy campaign contributors play cops and robbers, despite not having any training.
Also in Oklahoma, jury selection has begun in the Chris Lane murder case. The 22-year old Australian baseball hopeful was shot in the back while jogging down the street in August 2013. Three teens playing gangster were arrested, and now 17-year olc Chancey Luna is accused of pulling the trigger. Chris’s parents Peter and Donna Lane traveled from their Melbourne to take part in the trial.
Russell Brand is adding his voice to those pleading for clemency for convicted drug smugglers pair Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, who are facing the death penalty in Indonesia. The British celebrity is (famously) a recovering heroin addict, a factor which he says made him sympathetic to the Aussies’ plight. Indonesian President Joko Widodo has shown no sign of leaning towards granting clemency to the men.
France’s far-far-far-far-far (far) right politician Jean-Marie Le Pen is pulling out of regional elections, signaling that he lost the power struggle with his slightly less obnoxious daughter Marine Le Pen – current leader of the Front National party. Marine publicly rebuked dear old dad gave an interview in which he defended the head of nazi-collaborator Vichy France, and questioned the Holocaust. Marine has built the Front National into a contender by scaling back the flagrant anti-Semitism of her dad, while keeping the flagrant xenophobia against Roma, Muslims, and non-white immigrants in general.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet signed a bill recognizing same-sex and unmarried civil unions, granting such couples most of the rights married couples enjoy. “'It is estimated that more than 2 million people in Chile are living together,” said President Bachelet, “Today we give them the option of having their unions legally recognized.” The new law gives couples the right to inherit each other’s property and to receive pension benefits.
A crowded passenger jet returned to the airport in Seattle after the captain and passenger heard banging and screaming coming from underneath their feet. Apparently, a baggage handler had taken a nap in the plane’s cargo hold and got locked in there. Now, the man probably would not have been killed, as the baggage hold is pressurized and temperature controlled. The airline is investigating.
