Iran and the six major world powers are reportedly set to announce an historic deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear program. It follows ten years of work, two weeks of negotiations, four deadline extensions, and a night of marathon discussions at the UN headquarters in Vienna. Mind you, other sources deny the deal is ready – but Israel’s Haaretz newspaper claims that when Tuesday morning reaches the Austrian capital, the foreign ministers of the US, UK France, Germany, Russia, and China will hold a concluding session, and the announcement will follow that. Sometime later, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will plotz because he really, really opposes this.
Indonesia has drastically slashed the number of Australia cattle it plans to import – 50,000 to be imported into the country between July and September, down from 250,000 the previous quarter. Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council says it comes as a “surprise”, and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce says he is “disappointed”. Labor is questioning if the degeneration of bilateral relations under the Abbott government is possibly making things worse for Australian agriculture.
Acting on a tip, counter-terrorism police say they confiscated a cache of weapons from an abandoned house in Sydney’s inner west – weapons that include a World War II-era German MP-40 sub-machinegun, a .222-calibre sniper rifle with scope and a .45 caliber Colt 1911 automatic pistol. The weapons will undergo forensic examinations as cops investigate where they might have come from.
New York City will pay US$5.9 Million to the family of Eric Garner, the African American man seen in a viral video being choked to death by a white cop for the crime of selling individual cigarettes on a street corner. On the video, Garner is heard repeatedly saying, “I can’t breathe!” as he is rendered unconscious. It was one of a series of videos in 2014 showing previously hidden US police abuses against black people, shocking many Americans out of their comfortable stupors. BTW, the cop who killed Garner not only wasn’t arrested and charged, but he’s also trying to get his job back.
US President Barack Obama commuted the sentences of 46 people convicted of non-violent drug crimes. The 46 were serving overly harsh sentences out of proportion to their convictions – including 14 serving life sentences. Some were convicted of possessing crack cocaine, which for a long time carried a longer sentence than possessing an equal amount of regular cocaine – the difference being crack was popular among black people, and cocaine was popular among Wall Street traders, show-biz lawyers, and perhaps a few people around Washington, DC. On Tuesday, Mr. Obama will unveil criminal justice reform proposals.
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has dropped its ban on gay adults serving as scout leaders. The BSA ended its ban on gay youth in 2013. A bastion of social conservatism, the group held out for years against a rising tide of criticism for its intolerance, and parents increasingly turned their backs on what was once a ubiquitous part of American boyhood. Earlier this year, BSA president and former US defense secretary Robert Gates told the group’s national meeting that the ban on gay adults needed to end.
Mexico is offering a US3.8 Million reward for the recapture of escaped drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman; and the director of the prison from which Chapo escaped has been sacked.
Police in Shenyang in northeastern China shot and killed three “knife-wielding” men, identifying them as Muslim separatists from thousands of kilometers away in Xiniang province. It happened in a raid on an apartment in which 16 others were arrested. State broadcaster CCTV uploaded images of the raid to Chinese social media, showing cops being raised to the apartment on a cherry-picker and snipers posted on surrounding buildings.
