Libya hasn’t just turned into Iraq, it has the potential to become a lot worse. Islamic State’s North Africa unit announced its arrival with the beheadings of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians over the weekend. Egypt struck back with two rounds of fighter jet attacks on IS targets, but president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is calling on the international community to get in on the fight. “What is happening in Libya is a threat to international peace and security,” al-Sisi said.
Officials in Rome say Italy would consider participating in any military intervention against Islamic State in Libya. Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti says Rome could contribute as many as 5,000 troops to lead such a military mission – but wants to wait for the UN Security Council to work on the issue.
Cameroon claims to have killed more than 80 Boko Haram fighters and arrested 1,000 supporters. Nigeria says its troops reclaimed two towns from the Islamist militant group. And Niger reports arresting 160 people with links to Boko Haram since 6 February. The three countries formed an alliance with the much larger and better organized military of Chad to fight back against Boko Haram, which until now has done whatever it wants in Nigeria’s Borno state in its quest to form an Islamic caliphate.
Tens of thousands of Danes gathered in cities and towns to mourn the victims of last weekend’s attacks in Copenhagen – but also to make clear that they are not going to change their lifestyles to suit terrorists. Cops shot and killed a 22-year old gang member who may have been influence by Islamic State and other terrorist groups, but had no actual links. The gunman killed one person at a cafe hosting a discussion on free speech and a volunteer guard at a Synagogue.
Germany has charged a 93-year old man with 170,000 counts of accessory to murder for his alleged role in the Holocaust at the Auschwitz death camp. The man was not named. Prosecutors say anyone who served at a death camp can be charged with accessory to murder because the camp's sole function was to kill people. There is no statute of limitations on the worst war crimes of the 20th Century.
A freight train hauling oil tankers derailed in West Virginia in the eastern US, causing several cars to explode into flames. One homes was destroyed, authorities evacuated two towns, and at least two oil tankers loaded with North Dakota tar sands oil plunged into the Kanawha River. This happened in the same area on which a winter snow had dumped huge volumes of snow, making all search and rescue and containment efforts that much more difficult. It happened two days after another oil train derailed and caught fire in northern Ontario, Canada.
As many as 100 firefighters and all the equipment they could muster was not enough to stop a raging fire at a mall in the Del Castilho neighborhood of northern Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Nova America mall in a renovated former textile factory was one of the largest in Rio, and 300 shops were lost – but no injuries are reported.
The worst person in the world is Indian millionaire Muhammed Nisham, who authorities say (allegedly) rammed his Hummer into his security guard because the man didn’t open his security gate fast enough. Then, he (allegedly) beat the severely injured guard named “Chandrabose” with a metal rod. After lingering for two weeks on life support, Chandrabose died in hospital of a heart attack. Nisham is charged with murder. But he’s also (allegedly) a world-class douchenozzle – he still faces charges for allowing his then-nine-year-old son to drive his Ferrari in 2013. Nisham apparently made his money selling beedis, a type of Indian cigarette that’s even more dangerous than the regular ones due to inferior ingredients.
But the best person in the world is this Baby Squirrel Monkey at Taronga Zoo!
