Italian police arrest the captain and a crewmember of the immigrant ship that capsized on Sunday, killing 700 to 950 people. Only 28 people were rescued, and hundreds never had a chance as they were locked below on the lower deck and in the cargo hold. The EU set out a package of measures designed to stem the crisis, including seeking out and destroying human traffickers’ boats before they can be filled with Middle Eastern and sub-Saharan African immigrants and sent north off of the lawless Libyan coast. European heads of state will meet on the matter on Thursday.
The US aircraft Carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and a guided missile destroyer are headed to the waters off Yemen to intercept an Iranian ship believed to be carrying arms for the Houthi rebels. It’s meant as a show of force and reassurance to Saudi Arabia, which is leading a coalition bombing campaign against the Houthis. If it does interdict the Iranians, it could have serious consequences on areas where the US and Iran are cooperating – such as fighting Islamic State in Iraq or scaling back Tehran’s nuclear program.
A Washington Post reporter detained in Iran nine months ago now faces trial for alleged espionage. Jason Rezaian is accused of “collaborating with hostile governments” and spreading “propaganda”. The Washington Post calls the charges “absurd” and “despicable”.
The anti-terrorism raids around Melbourne that saw three men charged with terrorism-related offenses were sparked by messages found on devices linked to a 14-year-old UK boy. It prompted UK police to contact Federal Police with concerns of a “potential credible terrorist attack in Australia”. Greater Manchester Police said the boy was held on suspicion of involvement in preparing an act of terror. Authorities say he was in contact with 18-year old Sevdet Besim of Hallam, VIC, who is charged with conspiring to attack people on Anzac Day.
Six police officers in Baltimore, Maryland on America’s Eastern Seaboard are suspended as officials investigate the death of a 25-year old man in their custody. Gut-wrenching video has emerged of white cops arresting Freddy Gray and pulling him into a police van, wailing in agony with his legs dragging behind him. Within hours, he was hospitalized in a coma. Gray died of complications from a severed spinal cord. In subsequent media appearances, police officials have been unable to say why Gray was being arrested in the first place.
For only the third time in a decade, an agoraphobic grandmother from Crawley, West Sussex, UK had summoned the will to leave her house. And the first thing 57-year old Janet Faal did was fall down a manhole. She had moved a wooden pallet to help a friend reverse a car, and took a step – without noticing that the pallet was covering an open manhole. Faal hit her face on the pallet, and suffered a broken nose and broken leg.
