Hello, Australia! - Glaciers are melting faster than thought - Former UK Prime Minister Ted Heath was a what?!? - A wayward whale visits the capital of Argentina - And more in your CareerSpot Global News Briefs:
The world's glaciers are disappearing much faster than previously believed. The World Glacier Monitoring Service says that glacier ice has melted to the lowest levels since record-keeping began more than 120 years ago. The planet will lose 30 inches of glacier ice thickness this year, which the WGMS says is twice the rate lost in the 1990s, and three times the rate lost in the 1980s. The group's report in the Journal of Glaciology comes a few months before many of the world's leaders gather in Paris for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change. Many climate scientists note that the problem of global warming has already gone too far, and there's no "Plan B" should the Paris conference fail.
US President Barack Obama also emphasized the lack of a "Plan B" or back-up planet in announcing his climate plan at the White House on Monday. He's requiring states to cut carbon dioxide emissions over the next 15 years by 32 percent compared to 2005 levels. ‘"I don't want my grandkids to not be able to swim in Hawaii or climb a mountain or see a glacier because we didn't do something about it," said Mr. Obama. "‘That would be shameful of us. This is our moment to get something right."
UK authorities are investigating allegations that former Prime Minister Edward Heath might have been a pedophile. This comes with allegations from a retired senior police officer that during the 1990s, police dropped child sex abuse charges against a man when the probe threatened to expose Heath. Police actually put out a statement looking for potential victims: "If you have been the victim of any crime from Sir Ted Heath or any historical sexual offence, or you are a witness, or you have any information about this, then please come forward," implored Superintendent Sean Memory. Heath was leader of the Tories from 1965 to 1970 - famously referenced in George Harrison's "Taxman" on The Beatles' "Revolver" album - and Prime Minister from 1970 to 1974. He was replaced as the Tory leader by Margaret Thatcher after that, and spent the rest of his career on the back bench until 2001.
The head of China's Shaolin Temple is under investigation after a former monk posted online allegations of embezzlement and sexual impropriety. Shi Yongxin, the Buddhist abbot of Shaolin monastery in Henan province, is known in Australia for his plans to build a $300 Million Shaolin monastery/Kung Fu entertainment complex in Shoalhaven, New South Wales. But back in China, the anonymous accuser posted documents indicating that Shi allegedly embezzled money though fake receipts, maintained double identities, and had fathered several children with different women. The Shaolin Temple denies it - China's religious affairs bureau is investigating. Perhaps it will send a Martial Arts Master to investigate at a secret tournament on an island and.. nah.
Folks in Buenos Aires, Argentina got a thrill when a young whale swam into a city marina. But there's concern over the cub's well being, because hobnobbing around the yachts of the upscale Puerto Madero district isn't the proper environment for a young Humpback Whale. Police tried to lure him back into the Rio la Pata, which leads out of the Atlantic Ocean, but it's not clear if that was successful. This recalls the cases of Humphrey the wrong-way whale; another young humpback that got lost in California's San Francisco Bay in 1985 and 1990 - and of Delta and Dawn, a mother and calf that made wrong turns in the same waters in 2007.
