Hello, Australia! – A new, horrible video pretty much sums up America’s police problems – Woolworth’s ANZAC debacle answers the question, “Too soon?” – Oil thieves manage to destroy a river – And a lot more in your CareerSpot World News Briefs:

A Lithgow, NSW woman is in a critical condition after falling 30 meters while bushwalking in the Blue Mountains.  Police believe 44-year old Donna Christie had dropped her mobile phone and slipped off the edge of the Hassans Walls Lookout while trying to retrieve it.  The rescue mission took two hours, but they finally flew her to hospital.

Woolworths has pulled its ANZAC day “Fresh In Our Memories” advertising campaign, which appeared to tie the remembrance to buying groceries.  And the Carrspace ad agency that worked on it is keeping a low profile.  The Minister for Veteran Affairs Michael Ronaldson considered it disrespectful and asked the company to take it down.  But in this day and age, the Internet always win, and the parody memes are on social media for your perusal.

Indonesia might have nuclear power within ten years – which, when you think about it, is a horrible idea as the archipelago sits along three tectonic plates and has frequent earthquakes.  But with 250 million residents needing reliable power, the government is looking at a site at Gunung Muria in central Java for an underground plant.

Police in Arizona (sometimes known as “Texas, Jr.” or “Florida West”) are actually rationalizing an officer who deliberately slammed his police cruiser into an armed suspect.  The collision, wonderfully caught on police dashcams, sent the man flying in the air – before he was hospitalized in a critical condition.  The squad car plowed into a brick wall.

Now, normal people are questioning why Officer Michael Rapiejko (who totally hasn’t watched too many super-manly action films) didn’t hang back and establish a perimeter from which experienced negotiators could have dialed the situation down.  But this is America we’re talking about, and Dirty Harry doesn’t have any time for your “political correctness” or “rules”.  And the boss says Officer “Crash” Rapiejko actually saved the life of 36-year old petty criminal Mario Valencia – because the man was threatening suicide.  Now, taxpayers get to pay for Valencia’s medical and psychiatric care, as well as a trashed squad car.

So far, only nine bodies have been recovered from the Mediterranean Sea where 400 immigrants are feared to have drowned.  Survivors told the charity Save The Children that their boat capsized 24 hours after setting off from Libya.  144 people were rescued by the Italian Coast Guard, but around 550 people were on aboard – mostly young men and boys trying to escape the war, oppression, and grinding poverty of sub-Saharan Africa.

Oil thieves in southeastern Mexico ruptured a pipeline, which spilled into a river, fouling the water supply for more than 200,000 people.  This happened in Tabasco State near the city of Villahermosa.  Oil company workers are trying to contain the spill with booms.  Local officials are coordinating with the military to get tanker trucks of fresh water into the area.

Cuba is praising US for removing it from a list of state sponsors of terrorism.  US President Barack Obama did so after a weekend meeting with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro, ending more than 50 years of cold war.

Japanese authorities are investigating how an Asiana Airlines plane skidded off the runway at Hiroshima Airport late Tuesday night.  20 people were slightly hurt.  Transport ministry officials said a plane wheel might have clipped a radio facility near the runway on landing.
