The Federal Court is ordering former Health Services Union (HSU) boss Kathy Jackson to make A$1.3 Million in restitution for misappropriating funds. Islamic State's latest cowardly chicken-poop stunt really plunges into new depths. The terrorists beheaded an elderly academic - 82-year old archeologist Khaled Asaad - who looked after the Palmyra Unesco World Heritage site in Syria. He had spent the last 50 years of his life working at the site, until IS overran it earlier this year and took him prisoner.
Dozens of Nigerian villagers reportedly drowned in their attempt to flee a Boko Haram attack. A resident of Kukuwa in Yobe state said the militants "opened fire instantly, which forced residents to flee. Unfortunately many residents who tried to flee plunged into the river which is full from the rain. Many drowned." The militaries of Nigeria and its immediate neighbors have seriously degraded Boko Haram in recent weeks, and a joint multinational force is to come online this month. But Boko Haram is still able to exploit weaknesses in Nigeria's defenses, and has stepped up suicide bombings.
Thailand reopened the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, cutting out the bomb-damaged fence and pouring fresh concrete into the small crater left by the blast. Police say they are certain that the man in the yellow shirt seen in videos allegedly planting the bomb that killed more than 20 people had accomplices. The security camera footage shows a man sitting on a bench and taking off a large, black backpack. He then stands up and walks away without the pack, which was at the exact location of the explosion.
A survivor of the Paris Terror attacks in January is suing a radio station and two TV stations for broadcasting a report he says could have gotten him killed. The gunmen who killed twelve people at the magazine Charlie Hebdo - Said and Cherif Kouachi - were holed up in a printing shop outside the city. But the broadcasters included in their coverage that worker Lilian Lepere was trapped in the building, and hiding underneath the sink in the breakroom. "The divulging of information in real time, while the Kouachi brothers - armed and dangerous - were able to follow how the operation was going, presented a real risk to Lilian," said his lawyer Antoine Casubolo Ferro.
Spanish police want to fine a woman A$900 for violating the country's new and idiotic gag law forbidding citizens from photographing polcie without permission. That's a "free country"? The woman in the southeastern village of Petrer snapped a photo of a cop car in a disabled parking spot, and uploaded it to her social media account. The cops claim they were answering an urgent call about vandalism and had to exit their car in a hurry. The conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy passed the draconian legislation that creates fines for a number of offences, including unauthorized protests and photographing police without permission. The laws are opposed by rights groups such as Amnesty International, and the UN Human Rights body says they "threaten to violate individuals' fundamental rights and freedoms".
Actress Yvonne Craig is dead at age 78 in Pacific Palisades, California. Craig had been battling breast cancer which spread to her liver. She's remembered for playing Batgirl in the campy Batman series of the 1960s, as well as for being slathered in full body green make-up to play an Orion woman on the original Star Trek series, and for playing opposite Elvis Presley in "It Happened at the World's Fair" and "Kissin' Cousins".
