The US Justice Department is now investigating the death of a 25-year old African-American man who suffered a severed spine after being arrested by Baltimore police. Cops never have been able to say exactly why they arrested Freddie Grey. After the feds announced the probe, around a 1,000 people marched on the local police station where the six officers involved worked. All six have been suspended pending local and federal investigations.
The captain of the human trafficking ship that capsized in the Mediterranean Sea accidentally crashed the vessel into another ship that was coming to the rescue, according to Italian prosecutors. More than 800 people died in Sunday’s disaster, caused by the Captain’s negligence and by the fact that hundreds of immigrants were trapped behind locked doors in the lower decks and cargo hold.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos will not give up on peace talks with the Marxist FARC rebels, even after a clash between the militants and the military ended in 11 soldiers last week. Colombian conservatives have been demanding that Santos abandon the two-year-old negotiations in Havana aimed at ending a five-decade insurgency. Since the ceasefire is broken, Santos did restart air attacks against the FARC since the attack. But the FARC delegation at the talks remain committed to the peace process.
The head of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has resigned after reports saying agents attended sex parties with prostitutes funded by Colombian drug cartels. Michele Leonhart led the agency since 2007.
Kenya suspended seven top police officials after the security failings during the al Shabaab terrorist attack on Garissa University, in which terrorists killed 148 people. The siege lasted for hours, despite police and military personnel being closeby. It was the worst attack so far by the al Qaeda-linked group. Even though there were warnings of possible attacks against universities, police ignored the principle of Garissa University’s request for extra security before the attack.
The Prime Minister of Niger ordered schools around the capital closed to try to stem a deadly meningitis outbreak. PM Brigi Rafini is also appealing to the international community and the UN World Health Organization for about half a million doses of meningitis vaccine, so that children between 2 and 15 can be protected against the potentially fatal disease. Niger has that many doses, but it’s only half of what is needed. More than 900 cases have been diagnosed since January, and 85 people have died.
A 93-year old German man is admitting he is “morally guilty” for his service at the Auschwitz death camp in World War II. Oskar Groening counted the money stolen from new arrivals at the camp and witnessed mass killings, but denied any direct role. Groening also claims to have twice requested transfer from the camp. Over the decades, Groening has spoken publicly about his experiences at Auschwitz – he says it was to stop holocaust deniers.
Poland will buy billions of dollars worth of US Patriot surface-to-air missiles. This comes after reports that Russia deployed missiles to Kaliningrad, the Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea coast between Poland and Lithuania. President Bronislaw Komorowski says Poland’s military must modernize to keep up with current threats.
An American (naturally) priest has announced he’ll no longer offer classes to help people get their license to carry a concealed handgun. Fr. Edward Fride of Ann Arbor, Michigan – a sleepy, Left-wing university town with no major crime problem to speak of – said he will follow the orders of his Bishop, who informed him that such classes are not appropriate for church property.
