Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the government will show no leniency towards the family of an Australian Islamic State fight, should they attempt to come back home.  Fairfax Media reported the wife of Khaled Sharrouf and their five children are seeking to return to Sydney.  “I’m afraid you don't get off scot-free just because you say ‘oh I’ve seen the error of my ways’,” Abbott said of Tara Nettleton.  This comes as the government is working up legislation to make it easier to take away Australian citizenship of dual-nationality terrorists.

Israeli warplanes struck four targets in the southern Gaza Strip in the predawn hours, after a rocket was fired from Gaza on Tuesday evening.  The projectile from Gaza was blamed on Hamas, and landed in an open area.  Schools in the area are expected to operate as normal later on Wednesday. 

The Libyan Prime Minister who is recognized by the international community survived an assassination attempt.  Gunmen attacked Abdullah al-Thinni’s car in Tobruk, where the government has been headquartered since being routed from Tripoli by Islamist militias last year, who established their own body and claim to be the rulers of Libya. 

The Taliban claimed responsibility for a failed attack on a guesthouse in the diplomatic area of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul.  The four attackers were armed with Kalashnikovs and grenade launchers, but were quickly surrounded by police and unable to fight their way out – all four were killed.

Police in China have detained twelve people after the killer fire that swept through an old folks home in Pingdingshan in Henan Province, and are searching for three more.  Monday night’s fire killed 38 people, and injured six more.  Survivors complain that the privately-run Kangleyuan Home was understaffed.  President Xi Jinping ordered “all-out efforts” to care for the injured and to find out what had gone wrong.

An Italian organized crime boss has been arrested in Recife, Brazil after 31-years on the lam.  Pasquale Scotti was convicted in Italy for extortion, murder, and firearms offences committed between 1980 and 1983 – but skipped out of the country before his sentencing in 1984.  Now 56-years old, cops caught up with him as he lived the life of a food import company boss in Recife, while he was driving his two teenaged children to school. 

A terrible heat wave has killed more than 1,100 people in India, with the temperature in some sports approaching 50C degrees.  Most of the deaths have occurred in the southern states, but even Delhi hit 45.5C earlier this week – so hot that the asphalt streets and white pedestrian markings melted
